Voyager
Black—the profound absence of color—rarely finds its way into my work, but when it does, it elevates everything it touches. Voyager draws its name from the legendary space probes, Voyager 1 and 2, whose images of the cosmos continue to inspire awe. My Voyager seeks to do the same, magnifying the colors and forms of a single bloom. Do flowers truly need such amplification? Not in my garden. But in my studio, reality is a suggestion, and fantasy is the goal.
This sculpture rises on twin stems entwined with a hand-cut brass ribbon, its underside painted black. The ribbon weave through the base, emerging beneath the flower as a graceful leaf. The entire form stands anchored on a black-painted wooden disk and a delicate china cup, topped with a found object that glows like 24-karat gold—stunning!
The bloom unfolds in layers of exquisite papers: black with subtle swirling patterns reminiscent of water currents, and vibrant orange marbled paper from Italy are two. At its heart lies a painted lamp bobeche cradling a candle cup, while brass wire and coral beads form the stamen.
